The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has launched a detailed verification exercise for residents affected by the recent Oworonshoki demolition, marking a key step toward compensation and resettlement. The initiative aims to confirm genuine victims, verify property ownership, and assess the scale of damage before relief distribution begins.
Verification Exercise Targets Genuine Oworonshoki Demolition Victims
LASBCA explained that the Oworonshoki verification exercise would involve reviewing documents, conducting site inspections, and interviewing affected residents. These steps, the agency said, will ensure accuracy and prevent fraudulent claims.
According to reliable sources within LASBCA, only residents with valid proof of ownership or tenancy for legally built structures will qualify for compensation. Structures erected on canal setbacks, drainage alignments, or restricted zones will be excluded under Lagos State’s urban development policies.
Residents Demand Transparency in Compensation Process
Some community leaders and residents praised the LASBCA verification exercise, calling it an important move toward fairness. They, however, urged the state government to ensure transparency and accountability throughout the process.
“We welcome the exercise, but we want it done fairly. Relief should not go to politically connected people,” a resident said.
LASBCA to Conclude Verification Before Compensation
LASBCA assured that the Oworonshoki demolition verification will be completed within a fixed period, after which compensation and resettlement plans will commence.
The agency noted that the Oworonshoki demolition was part of a broader Lagos flood control and urban renewal project aimed at protecting lives and infrastructure in high-risk areas.
The LASBCA Oworonshoki demolition verification signals Lagos State’s commitment to balancing urban renewal with residents’ welfare. By ensuring only verified victims benefit, the agency hopes to strengthen public trust and advance its long-term flood mitigation and resettlement goals.
