The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the nationwide enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit (TGP) starting Thursday, October 2, 2025. The directive aligns with the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 2004, which aims to curb crimes and improve public safety.
IGP Declares End of Grace Period for Motorists
In a statement issued by Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Halima, on behalf of the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 7 Headquarters, Abuja, the IGP emphasized that the grace period given to motorists has officially ended.
“All vehicles with tinted glasses must now present valid and verifiable permit documents upon request by enforcement officers,” Egbetokun stressed.
Enforcement to Begin in FCT and Niger State
According to the police, enforcement teams will begin strict checks in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Niger State before expanding nationwide. “Routine checks will be conducted across FCT and Niger State by designated enforcement teams. Defaulters risk vehicle impoundment and possible legal prosecution,” the statement warned.
Motorists Risk Sanctions Without Permit
The police reiterated that operating any vehicle with tinted glass without an approved permit is now a punishable offence. Vehicle owners caught violating the regulation will face sanctions, including impoundment and possible court prosecution.
How to Apply for Tinted Glass Permit
Motorists have been urged to avoid sanctions by applying for or revalidating their Tinted Glass Permit through the official police portal: www.possap.gov.ng.
“Compliance with this directive is not only a legal duty but also a collective effort toward ensuring public safety and national security,” the police added.
Police Call for Public Support
The IGP called on citizens to support law enforcement officers during the exercise. “We therefore call on all residents to show patriotism by supporting law enforcement personnel during this exercise,” the statement said.
Conclusion
The full enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit (TGP) law underscores the Nigeria Police Force’s renewed commitment to national security. Motorists are advised to comply immediately to avoid penalties as the October 2 deadline takes effect nationwide.
