How Nigeria Immigration Service Fixed Passport Authentication for International Travel
Nigerian travelers can finally say goodbye to stressful border delays. The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) officially joined the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) Public Key Directory on Wednesday. This strategic move resolves major passport authentication issues that previously affected Nigerians at foreign borders.
Seamless Verification for Nigerian Passport Holders
Comptroller-General Kemi Nandap led a ceremony at the ICAO headquarters in Montreal, Canada. She successfully imported Nigeria’s Country Signing Certificate Authorities into the global system. As a result, border control systems in all member states can now verify Nigerian passports instantly.
Furthermore, this update fixes a technical gap that caused many travel headaches. Previously, foreign systems often failed to read the digital chips in Nigerian passports. Consequently, many travelers faced long manual checks or secondary screenings in Europe and North America.
Building a Global Chain of Trust
Service Public Relations Officer Akinsola Akinlabi explained the benefits in a formal statement. He noted that the process builds a vital “chain of trust” for the nation’s travel documents. “With the completion of the import process of all Nigeria’s existing CSCAs on the ICAO Public Key Directory to establish a chain of trust, Nigerian Passports can now be verified seamlessly by border control systems in all ICAO PKD member states,” the statement read.
Specifically, the ICAO Public Key Directory acts as a central hub for security certificates. Member countries use this platform to share the codes needed to validate electronic passports. Without these codes, travelers cannot use automated e-gates at modern airports.
Strengthening International Border Security
Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and the Ministry of Interior coordinated this major exercise. They described the development as a big win for international border security cooperation. In addition, the move highlights the government’s commitment to secure digital identity management.
