Google is now accepting registrations for its 2026 Hustle Academy program. This initiative aims to close the artificial intelligence (AI) skills gap across Africa. Currently, small business owners and students in South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria can sign up for free. This program provides practical digital tools to help local businesses grow in a tech-driven world.
Closing the AI Skills Gap in Africa
Africa’s digital economy is growing at a very fast pace. Experts believe it will reach a value of $72 billion by 2031. However, many businesses struggle because they cannot find workers with advanced AI skills. Google reports that nine out of ten African firms feel the negative impact of this talent shortage.
Generative AI could add $100 billion to the continent’s economy every year. Therefore, Google is prioritizing training that helps people use these new tools effectively. “If you want your business to compete, AI skills are essential to its growth; if you’re a graduate who can use AI, you’re more likely to get hired,” says Siya Madikane, communications manager at Google South Africa.
New Shorter Format for Busy Entrepreneurs
Google has redesigned the 2026 edition to be much faster. The program now features one-day bootcamps and 60-minute expert webinars. This change makes the lessons more accessible for people with tight schedules. Since its launch in 2022, the academy has trained over 18,000 small businesses.
Many of these past participants now report higher revenue and more jobs. Madikane explains why the format changed: “The new format was designed with the busy student and entrepreneur in mind. Time is the one thing entrepreneurs and students never have enough of, which is why we built the programme around that.”
What You Will Learn at Hustle Academy
The coursework now includes AI in every lesson. Specifically, students will learn how to automate marketing and understand customer habits. They will also learn how to speed up creative work and reduce paperwork. Consequently, these skills allow owners to focus on growing their brands.
Research from McKinsey shows that tools like Gemini and ChatGPT can boost productivity across the continent. Because of this, Google ensures all training remains free for everyone. Madikane states, “Cost should never be the factor holding back a founder from learning. That’s why all the content offered by the Hustle Academy is free.”
