Lagos, Nigeria – Former President Olusegun Obasanjo plans a massive free healthcare intervention for residents in Lagos suburbs. The Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation (OOF) organizes this initiative to mark his 89th birthday. Specifically, the outreach targets over 10,000 beneficiaries across Ikorodu and Alimosho areas.
Details of the 2026 Lagos Medical Mission
This major health drive runs from February 27 to March 4, 2026. Obasanjo’s Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, confirmed these details in a recent statement.
First, the team visits Ijede LCDA Council Hall on Friday, February 27. Next, they move to Imota Mini Stadium on Saturday, February 28. Finally, the mission shifts to Alade Stadium in Agbado/Oke-Odo from March 2 to March 4.
Comprehensive Free Healthcare Services
Residents can access a wide range of medical help. Dr. Olalekan Makinde, the Foundation’s CEO, listed the available treatments.
Services include free eye exams and prescription glasses. Additionally, the team will provide hearing aids to qualified people. Doctors will also perform heart health checks and blood pressure screenings.
Furthermore, the mission offers general consultations. Vulnerable citizens will receive essential medications at no cost. This includes children, the elderly, and low-income families.
Makinde stated, “This medical mission is a gift to the nation, especially to those who may not otherwise have access to quality healthcare.”
A Legacy of Public Service
The outreach highlights Obasanjo’s dedication to humanity. According to Makinde, the event celebrates the former leader’s life of service.
“As we celebrate the 89th birthday of His Excellency… we honour his legacy in the most meaningful way possible — by serving the people,” Makinde noted.
However, attendees must act quickly. The Foundation will serve patients on a first-come, first-served basis. Therefore, organizers encourage residents to arrive at the venues early.
Obasanjo Pushes for Educational Reforms
Beyond health, Obasanjo remains active in the education sector. He recently advocated for changes at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
He spoke in Abeokuta while hosting the new Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Uduma Uduma. The former President wants NOUN to restore its law program.
Moreover, he urged the university to use artificial intelligence. He believes this will modernize their academic systems. Currently, NOUN has about 300,000 registered students.
Uduma promised to revive the law faculty. Additionally, he plans to build on existing reforms. Later, the Vice-Chancellor inspected facilities at the Abeokuta Study Centre.
