LONDON – President Bola Tinubu will travel to the United Kingdom for a historic two-day UK state visit. Buckingham Palace announced the news on Saturday. The significant diplomatic event begins officially on March 18.
King Charles Extends Formal Invitation to Nigerian Leader
Significantly, the royal communications team confirmed that the visit is at the specific request of King Charles. This trip marks a major milestone in diplomatic relations. In fact, it is the first state visit to the UK by a Nigerian leader in 37 years.
History shows that the last comparable visit occurred in 1989. General Ibrahim Babangida was the guest at that time. Before that, Shehu Shagari visited in 1981, and Yakubu Gowon visited in 1973.
Strengthening Nigeria-UK Relations
Both leaders assumed their respective offices in May 2023. Consequently, they have already established a working relationship. For instance, President Tinubu met the British monarch in November 2023.
That meeting happened ahead of the COP28 climate conference in Dubai. At the time, the Nigerian president called the meeting a “significant step in strengthening the partnership between both countries.”
Furthermore, King Charles has a long history with Nigeria. As the Prince of Wales, he visited the West African nation in 1990, 1999, 2006, and 2018.
Climate Change and Global Priority on the Agenda
This upcoming visit builds upon recent high-level discussions. Notably, the King received President Tinubu at Buckingham Palace for a private meeting in September 2024.
Regarding that encounter, Bayo Onanuga, the presidential spokesperson, provided specific context. Onanuga said both leaders discussed global and regional matters. He added that they are “focusing on the urgent and complex challenge of climate change.”
Therefore, observers expect this March visit to further deepen ties between Abuja and London.
