Tinubu Leads Dignitaries to Reopening Ceremony
President Bola Tinubu and his wife, Senator Oluremi, led top government officials, business leaders, and creative icons to unveil the refurbished centre. The Federal Government also announced the renaming of the former National Arts Theatre in honour of Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole Soyinka, whose influence on literature, theatre, and film remains unmatched.
Colour, Music, and Theatre Take Centre Stage at Wole Soyinka Centre
The grand unveiling lasted three hours, blending spectacle, music, and rich symbolism. The highlight was a command performance of the hit musical Fela & The Kalakuta Queens, staged by Bolanle Austen-Peters Productions.
Though performed as a 30-minute teaser, the production dazzled the audience with stunning acting, vibrant choreography, and timeless afrobeat tunes from the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters, the play revisits Fela’s life as a fearless activist, musical genius, and husband to 27 wives, known as the Kalakuta Queens.
“The story of Fela and his Kalakuta Queens is as compelling as it is emotionally engaging. We are honoured that it was chosen as one of the productions to relaunch the National Arts Theatre,” Austen-Peters said.
Upcoming Shows in Lagos
After its role in relaunching the Wole Soyinka Centre, Fela & The Kalakuta Queens will return to Terra Kulture Arena in Lagos from December 26, 2025, to January 12, 2026. The run is expected to be one of the main attractions of Lagos’ festive “Detty December” season.
