President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s strong commitment to sports development in Nigeria, noting that Asaba, Delta State’s capital, has steadily grown into the headquarters of sports competitions in the country.
The President made this known while declaring open the 9th National Youth Games (NYG) at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, where over 6,000 young athletes are battling for 37 medals. He was represented by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications and former Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare.
Tinubu on Sports as a Unifying Force
Tinubu described the Games as “a veritable platform for discovering and nurturing talents” who have gone on to represent Nigeria at local, continental, and international levels. He stressed that sports remain a unifying factor for the nation and reaffirmed his government’s plan to keep investing in sports infrastructure and youth development.
“Very recently, we witnessed the President, alongside the First Lady, cheering the Super Falcons and the D’Tigress. That show of support underscores the administration’s firm commitment to continue investing in sports and strengthening development across the country,” Dare said on behalf of the President.
Commendations for Stakeholders
The President also commended the National Sports Commission under Mallam Shehu Dikko and Hon. Bukola Olopade for their role in promoting grassroots sports and youth engagement. He praised the Delta State Government for hosting the Games, highlighting Asaba’s growing reputation as the hub of major national sporting events.
Declaring the Games open, Tinubu prayed that “the best teams, the best states, and the best athletes will shine.”

Delta State’s Sporting Legacy
Speaking on behalf of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Emomotimi Guwor, described the Games as a celebration of Nigeria’s youth, unity, and future. He noted that Delta State, regarded as the “Home of Champions,” has consistently produced sports icons such as Stephen Keshi, Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha, Blessing Okagbare, and Ese Brume.
According to him, the state has backed this tradition with heavy investments in modern sporting facilities, youth empowerment, and grassroots competitions.
Asaba Ready to Host the Nation
Onoriode Oborevwori, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee and the Delta State Sports Commission, assured athletes and officials of a seamless hosting experience.
“From upgraded facilities to efficient logistics and a welcoming environment, Asaba is set to offer not just a sporting event, but a memorable experience,” he said.
The 9th National Youth Games is expected to further strengthen the country’s sports development drive while giving fresh opportunities to Nigeria’s young talents.
