RABAT – Senegal are the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations champions. The Lions of Teranga defeated hosts Morocco 1-0 on Sunday. This dramatic victory at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium secured their status as African kings. Furthermore, the match provided the world with “pure footballing drama,” featuring a walk-off protest and a missed penalty.
Pape Gueye Seals Historic Victory
The 2025 AFCON final extended into extra time after a goalless draw. Immediately, Senegal seized the moment. Pape Gueye drove towards the penalty area’s edge. Then, he rifled an unstoppable shot into the top right corner.
This goal broke the deadlock. Consequently, Morocco could not respond. Senegal held firm to lift their second continental trophy. Meanwhile, the Atlas Lions must continue their 50-year wait for a title.
Brahim Diaz Misses Vital Penalty
Before the winner, chaos erupted in stoppage time. Referee Jean-Jacques Ndala awarded Morocco a controversial penalty following a VAR review. He penalized defender El Hadji Malick Diouf for a foul on Brahim Diaz.
Subsequently, Senegal manager Pape Thiaw ordered his team to the dressing room in protest. However, Sadio Mane tried to convince his teammates to stay. During this 15-minute delay, fighting broke out in the Senegal fan section. Reportedly, a steward suffered an injury amid the chaos.
Eventually, the Lions of Teranga returned to the pitch. The match result then came down to two men. Diaz stepped up to take the kick. Surprisingly, he attempted a delicate Panenka chip. Edouard Mendy read the attempt perfectly and caught the ball. Therefore, the game went to extra time.
Match Highlights and Early Chances
The match started with high energy. In the sixth minute, Gueye headed a corner kick powerfully. However, Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou made a crucial save.
Later, the hosts created chances too. Ismael Saibari fired wide from outside the box in the 14th minute. Then, Senegal launched a counterattack. Iliman Ndiaye found himself one-on-one with Bounou. Nevertheless, the experienced keeper blocked the shot with his leg.
After halftime, the game became tense. Diaz set up Ayoub El Kaabi beautifully. Yet, El Kaabi sliced his shot wide. Additionally, Abde Ezzalzouli missed two promising opportunities for Morocco. First, he fired over the bar. Later, he shot directly at Mendy.
Ultimately, Senegal survived the storm. They are now the champions of Africa once again.
