Ondo State erupted in celebration on August 4, 2025 as Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa hosted a triumphant civic reception for the state’s indigenes who contributed to Nigeria’s victorious 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign. The event became a landmark moment as the Governor announced extraordinary rewards for the returning heroes.
The spotlight shone brightest on Super Falcons defender Tosin Demehin, hailed for her crucial defensive performances throughout the tournament held in Morocco. In recognition of her stellar contribution to Nigeria’s continental triumph, Governor Aiyedatiwa bestowed upon Demehin a staggering ₦30 million cash gift and a house located at the prestigious Sunshine Estate in Oba-Ile, Akure.
“This is a proud moment for us. Tosin Demehin has made Ondo State proud on the continental stage. As a token of our appreciation, the state government is awarding her ₦30 million and a house at Sunshine Estate, Oba-Ile,” Governor Aiyedatiwa declared to a jubilant crowd.
The Governor emphasized that Demehin, hailing from Ilaje Local Government, represents the very best of Ondo State – a “shining example of talent, discipline, and resilience.”
The generosity extended beyond the pitch. Recognizing the vital support roles behind the team’s success, Governor Aiyedatiwa also awarded ₦15 million cash each to Mary Akinsola, the Super Falcons’ Media Officer, and Mary Oduboku, the Team Secretary, both also proud daughters of Ondo State’s southern senatorial district.
Addressing all the honorees, Governor Aiyedatiwa expressed profound pride: “I am extremely delighted to welcome home our brave daughters. Their dedication, hard work and team spirit helped secure this victory. You have not only brought glory to the nation, but you have honoured Ondo State.”
Beyond the Bonuses: A Commitment to Sports Development
The Governor used the occasion to reaffirm his administration’s unwavering commitment to nurturing athletic talent within Ondo State. “We will continue to invest in young talents, create enabling environments, and provide the resources necessary for them to excel in all fields of endeavour especially sports,” he pledged.
Signaling immediate action on this commitment, Governor Aiyedatiwa made a significant promise regarding the state’s flagship football club: Sunshine Stars FC of Akure will receive “maximum support” to ensure their swift promotion back to the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL).
He also acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s national recognition of the Super Falcons, stating that such gestures significantly boost athlete morale nationwide.
State Officials Applaud Gesture
State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Henry Segun, assured the Governor that sports would continue to thrive in Ondo with consistent support. Dele Sunday Ajayi, Chairman of the Ondo State Football Association, lauded the Governor, calling him the “first state governor to honour Super Falcons players and officials who hailed from the State” and highlighting the powerful motivational message this sends to aspiring athletes.
Gratitude to WAFCON Heroes and a Call to Action
An overwhelmed Tosin Demehin expressed deep appreciation: “Receiving this honour from my home state means the world to me. As a former Sunshine Queens player, I know there is massive potential in women’s football here. This support gives hope to many young girls with dreams like mine.”
Demehin concluded with a call to stakeholders, emphasizing that the growth of Nigerian football, both male and female, is a “collective responsibility.”
The high-profile event was attended by Deputy Governor Dr. Olayide Adelami, Secretary to the State Government Dr. Taiwo Fasoranti, Chief of Staff Prince Segun Omojuwa, Head of Service Bayo Philip, Commissioner for Women Affairs Dr. Seun Osamaye, and Senior Special Assistant on Youth Empowerment Orioye Gbayisemore, among other dignitaries.
