Nigeria Military Ranking: The 2026 Global Firepower report reveals Nigeria’s standing in air and naval strength amidst a N5.41 trillion defense budget push.
Lagos, Nigeria – Nigeria’s military aircraft fleet totaled 159 units in 2026, placing the country 54th in the world. This data comes from the newly released 2026 Global Firepower (GFP) Military Aircraft Fleet Strength report.
The ranking highlights the nation’s overall air power capability. It accounts for all operational aircraft across the armed forces. Furthermore, the Nigerian Air Force remains a critical pillar of national defense. It supports counter-terrorism, surveillance, and troop mobility operations.
Inside the Nigerian Air Force Fleet
The report shows that Nigeria operates 159 military aircraft. The fleet boasts an estimated readiness rate of 87%. This high percentage reflects strong operational availability. Moreover, the composition prioritizes versatility for internal security rather than long-range strikes.
Here is the breakdown of the current air assets:
- Helicopters: Rotary-wing platforms dominate with 69 units. This includes 15 dedicated attack helicopters.
- Combat Jets: The fleet includes 14 fighter aircraft and 24 attack aircraft.
- Training and Transport: Nigeria operates 28 trainer aircraft and 12 fixed-wing transport planes.
- Special Mission: There are 12 units for surveillance and intelligence.
However, the fleet does not include aerial refueling tankers. This limits the operational range of the fighter jets.
Nigeria’s Naval Strength Surprises
In a significant development, the Nigerian naval fleet ranked as the strongest in Africa. The 2026 GFP report places the Nigerian Navy 22nd globally. This ranking assesses conventional war-fighting capabilities across land, sea, and air.
The navy operates 152 assets in total. Patrol boats make up the bulk of this force, numbering 132 vessels. Additionally, the fleet possesses two mine warfare ships and one frigate. These assets protect the Gulf of Guinea and Nigeria’s oil-rich Exclusive Economic Zone.
Comparatively, Egypt ranked second in Africa for naval strength with 149 vessels. Algeria followed in third place with 111 vessels.
African Military Rankings 2026
Nigeria faces stiff competition on the continent. Several African nations maintain larger air forces due to different strategic priorities.
- Egypt: Ranks 1st in Africa and 9th globally with 1,088 aircraft.
- Algeria: Holds 2nd place in Africa and 16th globally with 620 aircraft.
- Angola: Ranks 35th globally with 278 aircraft.
- South Africa: sits just ahead of Nigeria at 48th globally with 181 aircraft.
Despite the air power gap, Nigeria’s combined military assets place the country 33rd globally. Consequently, it ranks as the 3rd most powerful military in Africa overall.
Budget and Modernization Drive
The government is actively modernizing its defense capabilities. Nigeria’s 2026 budget proposal allocates N5.41 trillion to defense and security. This is an increase from N4.91 trillion in 2025.
What you should know is that Nigeria signed an agreement in December 2025. This deal secures 24 Italian-made M-346FA fighter jets. Furthermore, the country expects to receive AW-109 helicopters from Italy soon.
These investments aim to boost counter-insurgency operations in the northeast. The budget also emphasizes troop welfare and operational infrastructure. Bilateral partnerships, especially with the United States, continue to enhance training and technology transfers.
Strategic Outlook
The 2026 rankings unveil the growth and regional balance of power. Nigeria’s military strategy focuses on rapid deployment and domestic security.
While Egypt and Algeria dominate in sheer numbers, Nigeria is strengthening its specific operational needs. The structure of the fleet emphasizes internal security. Therefore, the country remains a key player in maintaining stability across West Africa.
