Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The governor announced his decision during a press conference in Enugu on Tuesday, describing it as a bold step toward greater collaboration, development, and a stronger voice for the South-East in national politics.
Mbah Declares Shift to APC for Visionary Partnership
Speaking at the event, Mbah explained that his defection to the APC was driven by his desire for a “visionary partnership that will bring transformative change” to both Enugu State and Nigeria.
He emphasized that the decision was carefully considered and not taken lightly. According to him, aligning with the APC’s progressive vision would help deliver better governance and economic growth to the people of Enugu.
“Today, after a long period of reflection, we have decided to leave the PDP and join the APC,” Mbah said. “We share a vision that transformation must be disruptive. I have found in His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a partner in purpose—a man with the courage to make the tough choices that secure lasting prosperity for tomorrow.”
Political Heavyweights Accompany Mbah to APC
Governor Mbah was joined at the press conference by his predecessor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, several state and federal lawmakers, local government chairmen, councilors, and members of the Enugu State Executive Council.
He said the move represented a “collective decision” by Enugu’s political leaders who believe joining the APC would strengthen the state’s voice at the national level.
“This is no whimsical decision,” Mbah stated. “It is a collective move by the political family in Enugu State—members of the National Assembly, the State House of Assembly, the Executive Council, local government chairmen, councilors, political appointees, and over 80% of party executives.”
Mbah Thanks PDP, Says South-East Was Often Ignored
Governor Mbah expressed gratitude to the PDP for its support during his election campaign but criticized the party for neglecting the South-East’s concerns.
“To the Peoples Democratic Party which provided us the platform on which we campaigned and won, I extend deep gratitude,” he said. “The PDP supported us through a demanding campaign and joined us in celebrating the victory. However, despite our loyalty, our voices were too often disregarded.”
Enugu Governor Promises Brighter Future Under APC
The Enugu governor assured residents that his defection to the APC marks the beginning of a new era of progress and inclusivity for the state.
“The voice of Enugu people and indeed that of the South-East people would now be heard in Abuja,” Mbah declared. He expressed confidence that working under the APC-led federal government would unlock new opportunities for growth and strengthen national unity.
He added, “Our partnership with the APC will usher in a brighter future for Enugu and Nigeria as a whole.”
Governor Peter Mbah’s defection to the APC signals a major political shift in Enugu State and the South-East region. With his commitment to advancing development and collaboration, Mbah believes his new alliance with President Bola Tinubu’s administration will drive inclusive growth and give Enugu a stronger voice in national affairs.
