Ondo State Governor, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has taken a firm step to protect Ilaje from sea incursion. He recently approved a vital project. This initiative aims to save communities in Ilaje Local Government Area. Currently, the Atlantic Ocean erodes these lands aggressively.
Mr. Biyi Poroye announced this significant development on Tuesday. He serves as the Chairman of the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC).
Battling Ocean Surge in Coastal Communities
Ocean surges constantly attack these regions. Consequently, many residents have lost their homes. The Ayetoro community suffers the most severe damage. Sadly, the ocean has swallowed large portions of their land.
However, Poroye confirmed that the government will fix this. He stated that the governor is determined to reclaim all affected areas.
Specifically, work will start in Obe Nla. Poroye explained that the governor officially approved the reclamation project for the Obe Nla community. Therefore, OSOPADEC is now selecting a contractor.
Poroye highlighted the scope of the work. He said, “Every coastal community in Ilaje and Ese-Odo Local Government Areas will be reclaimed.”
Furthermore, he provided a timeline. “Within three years, we can reclaim the entire area, but we need more funds. The sand required for the project is in the sea,” he added.
Plans for Ayetoro Community Reclamation
The situation in Ayetoro remains critical. Poroye noted that the Federal Government showed interest in helping. However, the state government is ready to act alone if needed.
He explained their stance firmly. “We are giving the Federal Government some time, but if it fails to implement its plans, we will commence the project next year.”
Urgent action is necessary. Poroye warned, “Ayetoro must be saved because if it fails, the entire area will be affected. Even our water project in Aboto is already becoming salty.”
New Financial Independence for OSOPADEC
Beyond erosion control, Governor Aiyedatiwa improved how the commission operates. He approved a dedicated bank account for OSOPADEC. This ensures proper management of funds.
Poroye contrasted this with previous administrations. He remarked, “In the past, most governors did not release funds meant for the commission, making it seem as if Ilaje and Ese-Odo were not part of the state.”
He noted that only the Adefarati and Agagu administrations acted differently.
Now, the process is transparent. Poroye stated that they only need to make formal requests. Then, the governor quickly approves them. This method ensures fair resource allocation.
Focus on Staff Welfare and Future Projects
Additionally, the chairman prioritizes his workers. He focuses on staff training and capacity building. In fact, the commission recently promoted 124 eligible staff members.
Finally, Poroye credited his success to the governor. He attributed the achievements of the last six months to timely approvals. OSOPADEC will continue to work with other agencies to develop these coastal communities.
