The Federal Government invites Nigerian postgraduate students to apply for the fully funded 2026 Petroleum Technology Development Fund sch
The Federal Government has officially opened the application portal for the 2026 Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Overseas Scholarship Scheme. Consequently, Nigerian postgraduate students can now apply for opportunities to study in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Malaysia.
This major development gives scholars a chance to gain advanced knowledge in the oil and gas sector. Dada Olusegun, the Special Adviser to the President on Social Media, confirmed the news on Monday.
He shared the update via X (formerly Twitter). The post stated, “FG has announced the commencement of applications for 2026 Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Scholarships overseas.”
Benefits of the PTDF Overseas Scholarship
According to the board, the scheme targets candidates pursuing MSc and PhD degrees. Furthermore, the government focuses on disciplines that are relevant to the oil and gas industry.
Successful applicants will enjoy comprehensive benefits. For instance, the fund covers tuition, return flight tickets, and accommodation. Additionally, scholars receive living allowances, health insurance, and bench fees where applicable.
The PTDF statement noted the importance of this initiative.
“The 2026 Overseas MSc and PhD Scholarships provide access to world-class training, research facilities, and global expertise,” the statement read.
It further added that the goal involves “developing indigenous capacity in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.”
UK PhD Split-Site Arrangement
Specifically, the board has introduced a unique structure for PhD applicants targeting the United Kingdom. Therefore, these scholarships will follow a split-site arrangement.
Consequently, scholars will conduct research between the College of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Kaduna (CPESK), and UK partners. These partners include Robert Gordon University, University of Strathclyde, and the University of Portsmouth.
Eligibility and Requirements
However, the agency emphasized that the selection process remains highly competitive.
“Only candidates who demonstrate outstanding merit and suitability will be considered,” the statement warned.
Therefore, the board will evaluate applicants based on academic credentials and research proposals. They will also look at professional body membership and industry relevance.
To qualify for the MSc category, applicants need a minimum of Second Class Lower (2.2) in their first degree. Moreover, they must possess five O’Level credits, including English Language and Mathematics.
Completion of the NYSC programme and computer literacy are also mandatory. Meanwhile, PhD applicants must submit a detailed research proposal. This document should outline objectives, methodology, and data collection approaches.
How to Apply for the 2026 Scholarship
Crucially, candidates must pay attention to verification.
“All applicants must ensure their National Identity Number (NIN) is verified prior to application,” the PTDF statement added.
The board also issued a stern warning regarding fraud. It stated that “multiple applications or submission of falsified documents will result in automatic disqualification.”
Interested candidates should apply online immediately. You can visit the official portal at scholarship.ptdf.gov.ng to see approved programmes. Finally, applicants must submit their forms before the closing date on February 27th.
